For those of you who insist on continuing the fruitless debate around how to control your employees’ use of social media and the internet at work should take a hard look at these findings (from Cisco, US News, and Online Courses). I’m the first to admit that nothing in the world of infographics is definitive, but it’s contextual and shouldn’t be overlooked. If 30% of emerging workforce is quite literally willing to sacrifice salary for technology and communications freedoms at work, you need to stop worrying about your stupid policies, firewalls, and third-world monitoring practices. If you trust them enough to hire them, you should trust them enough to use their judgment with the tools you give them. Move on, HR; there are far more productive things for you to be focused on.
