Empower Employees for Success with Social Onboarding

Employers generally stink at welcoming new employees into the fold. I know this partially because I’ve been “brought on board” several times throughout my career; but I know this mostly because I’ve watched HR departments botch it up time and time again. It usually goes something like this: spend a whole day in a conference room while a parade of characters attempts to tell you absolutely everything you ‘need to know’ about the company; they pepper you with new acronyms, shower you with paperwork, and read from a  seemingly endless deck of power-point slides – the first iteration of which was made in 1985. And at the end of the day, you leave with a nice glaze over your eyes and a rusty nail hammered through your temple. It’s a wonder anyone ever comes back for day 2…

The good news – and there is always good news – is that there are some pretty cool developments taking place in the world of on-boarding. Social is one of them. Think about it: much of what it really takes to get up the learning curve doesn’t come from some dusty old policy and procedural manual. It comes from what you learn from the people around you. It’s about what they share when you’re social with them: the secret handshake, the unwritten rules, skeletons in the closet, and the sacred cows.
